Of the four winners of this year's Los Alamos Venture Acceleration Fund (VAF) — one stood out.

Etkie, a jewelry firm that works with Native American women in New Mexico and sells in exclusive boutiques, earned $34,000 from the fund that traditionally has focused on supporting high-tech startups and technology commercialization projects.

While Etkie's CEO was hustling jewelry at the Paris Fashion Week and working to establish her wholesale model, the other companies that earned funds were working on solar technology, quantum dots and sensors for health care.
