THE OATMEAL WOOL CAPE

The cape, up close.

Wool and alpaca on the outside, silk charmeuse on the inside. These are the photographs we would want to see before buying one.

HOW IT LAYS

It hangs from the shoulders and moves when you do.

One shape, with no sleeves and no waist. The front sits at the hip and the back falls lower, so it covers the hips from every side.

From the side, walking: the front hem sits at the hip, the back falls lower

From behind, climbing the rocks: the cape moves with the body
Reaching up, the cape lifts with the arm.

THE INSIDE

Silk you only see when the cape moves.

The lining is 100% silk charmeuse, in a warm brown. It slides over a sweater instead of grabbing it.

The outside is undyed. The marbled oatmeal comes only from blending white wool with 30% black alpaca.

HOW IT CLOSES

Nothing shows but silver.

Open at the collar: the silver concho on one side and the hidden snaps on the other
Open, you can see the snaps. Closed, you can't.

BEFORE YOU BUY

What you might be wondering.

Will it stay closed?

Yes. Four hidden snaps run down the inside of the front. The concho is decorative, so nothing shows but silver.

Can I use my hands?

Yes. The cape is open at the sides, and your hands come out through the openings. In the photographs above, Julie is climbing rocks in it.

Is it warm enough without sleeves?

It's a real wool coat's worth of warmth without the sleeves, and it is cut to go over a sweater.

Will the wool itch?

The wool is lambswool from yearling sheep, between 19 and 20 microns, the range soft garments are made from. We added 30% black alpaca because it makes the cloth softer. The silk lining is what touches your clothes.

Will it make me look wide?

It has volume, and that is the shape: it swings out from the shoulders and covers the hips. If you want it closer to the body, take the smaller size. The snaps close either way.

Is it too much for every day?

We made it to put on over jeans and boots and feel dressed. It goes to a holiday party over a black dress as easily as it goes over jeans.

What about rain, and cleaning it?

Wool and alpaca shed water and shrug off most of what a day puts on them. When it does need cleaning, it is dry clean only.

Why is it $595?

We were in for some sticker shock ourselves. We knew making anything in America would be expensive. We just had no idea it would be this hard.

Sourcing everything here, from the fiber to the last stitch, is expensive. $595 is what it takes to hopefully break even on our first batch.

Which size do I take?

Julie is 5′7″ and wears the S, over a sweater. Between sizes, take the smaller one.

What if it doesn't fit?

If your size is in stock, we'll exchange it. If it isn't, we'll refund your purchase.
